Getting Started with WebCT and LearnLink

The Learning Technologies Resource Centre at McMaster University offers two e-learning technologies to facilitate technology based learning at McMaster University. These two technologies are WebCT and FirstClass (which is known on campus as LearnLink). Both systems offer a different set of features and abilities that cater to the different needs of the students, staff, and faculty at McMaster university.

What is WebCT?

WebCT (or Web Course Tools) is a web browser driven Learning Management System. WebCT includes tools that make it easier for instructors to deliver course content online in the form of lecture notes, study guides, syllabus references, grades, self tests, quizzes, discussion groups and other features. WebCT is used by many instructors in nearly all faculties.

What is LearnLink?

LearnLink is an electronic learning environment (based on FirstClass) which allows open access to course discussion conferences, chat rooms, instant messaging, and e-mail. LearnLink can be accessed from an internet browser but we strongly recommend the use of the LearnLink downloadable client software. LearnLink enjoys significant usage on campus from the Bachelor of Health Science program, Nursing, Psychology, and many more. In addition, LearnLink also facilitates communication for a large number of campus clubs
