Cover tone, Deckton. A prominent, in many instances repeated, note that sounds above the register of the fundamental line or main linear progression. In some instances a cover tone can be mistaken for the Kopfton, but the voice-leading structure should make the distinction clear. The example, from Variation 9, shows a cover tone in mm. 1-2 and another cover tone, D in mm. 3-4.
