Initial ascent, Anstieg. The music of the upper voice at the beginning of a composition that leads via a linear progression from an initial tonic to the Kopfton. The first four measures of the Aria exhibit an initial ascent from to F. An initial ascent usually occupies only a small opening portion of a composition, whereas an initial arpeggiation occasionally occupies the greater part of an entire composition.
